The Best of Times, 1956

Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon were campaigning for re-election.
The Baby Boom was in full swing.
The "Ed Sullivan Show" played host to Elvis Presley, who made three appearances for an unprecedented $50,000. Presley was shown only from the waist up. (Ed Sullivan also played host to "The Singing Rockets" -- monetary compensation unknown.

Elvis's songs, "Hound Dog" and "Don't Be Cruel" were tops.
Rod Serling's Requiem for a Heavyweight was aired on CBS PLAYHOUSE 90.
The Mickey Mouse Club was in it's second year --M-I-C, K-E-Y, M-O-U-S-E !
Grace Metalious' novel, Peyton Place was on the best-seller list.
Dr. Jonas Salk's polio vaccine was made available for mass use in August of 1956.
Eisenhower won re-election in November against Illinois' own Adlai E. Stevenson.
Chevrolet introduced the '57 Chevy Bel-Air on Labor Day, 1956; it became one of the most popular cars ever.
The Academy Award for Best Picture was won for Around the World in 80 Days, starring David Niven.  Yul Brynner won the best actor award for The King and I, beating out James Dean for Giant. Ingrid Bergman won best actress for Anastasia. The awards were presented in 1957.
Awards presented in 1956: Ernest Borgnine for Marty, Anna Magnani for The Rose Tatoo.
Other films nominated were: Love Me or Leave Me, Love is a Many Splendored Thing, Mr. Roberts, Picnic, East of Eden, Man with a Golden Arm, Bad Day at Black Rock, I'll Cry Tomorrow, Summertime and Interrupted Melody.
The Nobel Prize for Literature was won by Spanish writer, Juan Ramon Jimenez for his work, Platero and I.
The Nobel Prize for Physics was won by three Americans: John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley, for their work in developing the transistor.
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to Cyril Hinshelwood and Nikolai Semenov.
Nobel Prize in Medicine: Dickinson Richards, Jr. (American) and Andre Cournand (American, born in France) for work done in heart catherization.
There was no Peace Prize awarded in 1956.
SWAPS won the Kentucky Derby.
